A journey exploring memory, heritage, neighborhoods, film, and urban experiences, through 18 locations in Timișoara’s neighborhoods
From July 31 to August 3, 2026, Timișoara City Celebration invites the public to discover the city through projects funded by the Municipality of Timișoara, via the Center for Projects, as part of the “Cultural Landmarks” program. Guided tours, installations, exhibitions, films, and urban experiences highlight Timișoara’s history, heritage, and diversity.
In the 2026 edition of Timișoara City Celebration, the events funded through Cultural Landmarks make up a program that combines heritage, the arts, and urban exploration. From guided tours of sites that have shaped the city’s recent history to workshops, film screenings, installations, exhibitions, contemporary dance, immersive experiences, and interventions in public spaces, the program invites the public to discover Timișoara as a place of cultural diversity and discovery.
The selection brings together organizations working on a wide variety of complementary themes: food and climate change, the memory of the Revolution, the heritage of the Hungarian community, contemporary dance, film, emerging art, architecture, the city’s relationship with water, design, and neighborhood life. Together, these events contribute to creating a diverse cultural experience and invite the people of Timișoara to discover the city by walking, observing, listening, participating, reflecting, and engaging in dialogue. Through “Landmarks in Culture,” Timișoara City Celebration offers an emotional map of the city: one in which the Bega River, Fabricul, Maria Square, the Hungarian House, Civic Park, the Bastion, art spaces, and places steeped in history become meeting points for communities, generations, and artistic practices.
Cultural Landmark: The First Multi-Year Funding Program Implemented by a Local Public Authority in Romania
Timișoara’s large-scale projects, which have a long-term impact on the development of the local cultural scene, are funded by the City of Timișoara through the Center for Projects, as part of the Cultural Landmarks program. Launched in 2021, the program became, starting in 2024, the first multi-year program in Romania supported by a local government, with a proposed budget of 25 million lei for the period 2024–2027. The program offers organizations the opportunity to plan and implement projects over a four-year period. Since the program’s launch, 32 cultural projects have been funded. The funded projects have revitalized both the central area of Timișoara and neighborhoods such as Fabric, Mehala, Dacia, and others, and have expanded the cultural offerings throughout the city.
So far, projects funded through Cultural Landmarks have attracted over 97,000 direct beneficiaries—residents of Timișoara who have participated in the organized events and activities. Multi-year projects currently underway include: the contemporary art and architecture biennials, local film festivals, the two jazz festivals—unique in the country—as well as projects dedicated to design, dance, and music (both classical and electronic), and those focused on heritage and minorities, keep the spirit of the Cultural Capital alive and put Timișoara on the map of the world’s major cultural scenes.
